In terms of fanbase, the Royal Challengers Bangalore is one of the biggest franchises in the world of cricket. There are millions who support this team despite them having no silverware to show how big this team really is. Over the years, fans having been hopeful and each year we can hear them chanting that this is finally the year for RCB to break their duck. But sadly, the team hasn’t been able to cross the finish line. And what’s heartbreaking is, RCB have made it to three IPL finals and have always ended up second best.
2021 is a new year, but the hopes of every RCB fan is still the same. So can this year finally be the year for RCB to get their hands on the coveted trophy? Well, it looks very promising especially with the team they have this season. But its not just that, there are quite a few reasons why RCB can finally put an end to their trophy drought. Let us look at them, one by one.
Can RCB Break Their Trophy Drought?
Just like every year, there are renewed hopes that seem to dwindle away at the back end of the tournament, but there is something about 2021. It is the year of unexpected things, and RCB winning the IPL trophy can finally happen. Here’s a few reasons why I do think RCB have a good chance of winning the title this year!
#1. Captain Kohli’s Scintillating Batting Form
As far as run scoring is concerned, Virat Kohli has been in top form. Although that elusive International century has been eluding him since 2019, the Delhi bloke has been in super form for Team India. With that being said, he will surely like to continue his good run of form in the IPL. Moreover, he did mention that he will be opening throughout the tournament. And RCB fans know very well that the last time he did that, he amassed a whopping 973 runs with RCB reaching the final that year (in 2016).
#2. Solid Middle Order With X-Factor Players
Over the years, RCB have always had a solid top three but lacked firepower in the middle order. Last year, debutant Devdutt Padikkal had a dream season with Virat Kohli and AB De Villiers the other main scorers for the team. And they lacked players who would finish the innings well. But this year, they have strengthened that with the addition of X-factor players like Glenn Maxwell and Dan Christian. Plus, they also have some hard hitting Indian young talent like Mohammed Azharuddeen and Rajat Patidar and more. Surely, RCB have a solid middle order this season, which they lacked so badly over the past few years. If Padikkal, Kohli, and De Villiers can continue their run scoring form, and Maxwell and Christian be at their utmost best, RCB can surely challenge for the title this season.
#3. Dan Christian’s Luck Since 2017
Another massive reason why RCB can go all the way is because of one player; Dan Christian. The Aussie all-rounder will be having a second stint with the franchise, but this time, he is coming with much more experience as well as trophies under his belt. Since 2017, whichever franchise Christian has turned up for, they have ended up winning the trophy. In 2017, Christian played for the Trinbago Knight Riders. In 2018, he turned up in the Mzansi Super League for the Jozi Stars. The following year, he won the BBL trophy with the Melbourne Renegades while in 2020 he won the Vitality T20 Blast with Nottinghamshire. And this year so far, Christian has already won a title with the Sydney Sixers and looking to add one more with RCB this season.
#4. Well Balanced Bowling Unit
RCB have always been one the best batting sides in the tournament and unfortunately, they haven’t had a decent bowling unit. But this year, they have some pretty good bowlers who can help them defend scores. With the addition of New Zealand’s Kyle Jamieson and the return of Kane Richardson, RCB have two good International bowlers. Besides, they have a high on confidence Mohammed Siraj as well as the raw pace of Navdeep Saini in their ranks. Their spin department has the ever-reliant Yuzvendra Chahal and the uncanny off-spinner Washington Sundar. Moreover, they will be having more bowling options as well this season with the likes of Maxwell and Christian in the team. So all in all, their bowling unit looks quite good, unlike the previous seasons. The above reasons are enough for every RCB fan to be super excited this year. So will this finally be the year where RCB break their trophy drought? Well, let’s find out on 30th May 2021!
